Einride, Ericsson and Telia partners on 5G to bring autonomous, all-electric vehicles to the market

11.7.2018

November 7, 2018 - The installation of Einride’s autonomous electric transportation (AET) system will be the first commercial application of their all-electric vehicles in the world, and it is made possible by Ericsson’s 5G technology. The partnership begins with the installation of a 5G network, 4G radio with 5G core in collaboration with Telia, a leading telco in the Nordic-Baltic region, enabling high-performance connectivity at the site. The installation will serve a continuous flow of Einride's autonomous vehicles operating at a DB Schenker facility in Jönköping, central Sweden, beginning this fall.

The ambition from the involved parties is to create a sustainable transport solution. The change is enabled by technology providers and driven by the customers demand for sustainable transport.

There is a paradigm shift going on in the transport industry and 5G with its high data speeds and ultra-low latency is powering a new world of autonomous vehicles that takes fleet management to the next level. Einride’s transportation solution, is a perfect example of how 5G can drive cost efficiencies, improve safety and create a sustainable future, says Åsa Tamsons, Senior Vice President and Head of Business Area Technologies & New Businesses, Ericsson

Einride’s driving mission is to lead the sustainable transition of road freight transportation. 5G provides the connectivity and reliability we need to safely introduce the Einride autonomous vehicle on public roads, paving the way for a 90 percent reduction in CO2e emissions and an elimination of NOx emissions, says Robert Falck, CEO, and founder of Einride.

Einride’s autonomous vehicle is a new type of vehicle, that has no driver in the vehicle. The all-electric, autonomous transport system that the autonomous vehicle is part of could potentially replace more than 60% of today’s transport with a cost competitive and sustainable alternative. A key enabler for a sustainable transport system is high-performance connectivity. 5G is a cornerstone in creating sustainable transport for tomorrow's needs.

The partnership between Ericsson and Einride will focus on connectivity for autonomous vehicles. The partnership will allow Ericsson and Einride to explore the opportunities that 5G connectivity and autonomous vehicles will bring. The ambition is to jointly develop solution to create a sustainable transport system.
